So this musing is a sort of follow on from my previous musing on reflections in wedding photography where I spoke about how showing images of reflections has a much more engaging effect on the viewer. You can see this previous musing here.
Having recently become more familiar with the work of the famous photographer Saul Leiter, I thought I would try and incorporate some of his style in my own photography. Saul Leiter was an American photographer who was inspired by the famous street photographer Henri Cartier Bresson, amongst others. Saul passed away in 2013 and although less well known when he was most active his work has become more and more respected over the years. A lot of his street scenes of New York featured not just reflections but more complex transparencies (shooting through steamed up windows etc) and mirroring effects (shooting through glass to see the scene beyond the glass but also seeing a scene reflected in the glass). Similar to the effect of reflections, these styles of photography encourage the viewer to view everyday events in an unconventional way, helping to engage the viewer with the photograph and adding more interest than if the scene had been photographed in the more traditional manner.
Some of the following images of my own wedding photography feature some more of my reflections, shooting through transparent material and the more complex mirroring effects. At first glance some of the mirroring ones may look like they have been photoshopped in some way but all the photographs featured are straight out of camera (SOOC). I’m sure if Saul Leiter had been a wedding photographer then some of his work would have featured this style.

I loved reading your words Damian. Some really lovely captures here!
The shot of the bride in front of the mirror: nailed it!
These are so neat! Love the first couple.
Super pretty, and creative photos! I love how you use reflections.
Loving the shots with the reflections mate, nice work!
Reflection mania. Great work!
Really interesting use of the reflections. It gives a different perspective on the wedding day. Very cool.
Wait wait wait. This is bonkers! I love it though
Super creative set of images. Beautiful work
I love these! They seem to tell two stories at once!
Saul Leiter was a master of photography with a very unique vision that can’t be reduced to ‘reflections’ or steamed up windows. Is this post an SEO ploy in the wake of Leiter’s death and the renewed interest in his work? Hope not.
Hi Bob.
Thanks for your comment.
I only became aware of Saul Leiter after his death. I agree he was a master of photography and I am in no way suggesting he only ever did reflections or transparencies. As stated on my Musings header these posts are just me rambling on about what and who interests me in photography.
Brilliant and so creative.
I love the reflection in the car interior mirror, stunning!
