“It’s as though there’s a wonderful secret in a certain place and I can capture it. Only I, at this moment, can capture it, and only at this moment and only me”.
When I first read the above words by pioneering documentary Photographer, Walker Evans, it was a eureka moment that struck a chord with my Photographers instinct, “that’s it” I thought to myself as the simple truth of those words sank in.
The secret he spoke about wasn’t a real hidden secret that no one else could find but rather it was a look, a touch, a fleeting moment, a play of light and shadow, a reflection, a smile or a playful embrace. The secret of course was being receptive to those moments, to anticipate them, see them and be aware enough to capture them. That’s what I do with my wedding photography, record those secrets, those embraces, those looks, those touches, those 200ths of a second that will mean the world to you. Along with these I also capture the details, the people, the laughs, the tears and all the little stories that make your day so wonderful.
So how did I develop these Photographers’ instincts that enable me to take great wedding photos? Well quite simply I became good at photography first, the way I see it, I’m not a Wedding Photographer; I’m a Photographer who photographs weddings.
Only after taking tens of thousands of images including band and model portfolios, portraits, landscapes, still life’s, travel and event photography did I develop the skills, the experience, the perception and the instincts to be a good Photographer. Only after these many thousands of images and years of practice and study did I then start photographing weddings.
